This drastic change can be attributed to the arrival of an unprecedented weapon that profoundly transformed the fundamental relation of powers between nations. Indeed, after the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the world was never the same. Subsequently, states have acquired a set of protocols, programs, and...
The power of the General: Which factors influence the level of authoritarianism in the Southern African context?
Wordsworth, Ronan Peter ; Riegl, Martin (advisor) ; Doboš, Bohumil (referee)
1 Abstract This paper sets out to answer the central question on the causes of authoritarianism within the regional context of Southern Africa. The hypothesises of the article are that there are several factors that contribute to authoritarian levels within the South African Development Community (SADC). The research aims to adequately define the concept of authoritarianism, and then investigate the relationship between authoritarianism and five different indicators. The links are explored for level of authoritarianism against the level of military expenditure of the government, the threat perception of the government, whether there is a single dominant-party system of government, whether the country has a history of coup d'états, and finally, the dominant party in the civil-military relations. This leads to an investigation into the role that the military plays within authoritarian regimes, and which factors lead to increased authoritarianism. Due to the unique post-colonial context whereby many liberation movements and fighters were then installed as leaders of the country, there is a 'special relationship' between many leaders in the Southern African Development Community and the respective military and defence leadership and this paper will seek to explore these links. It is hypothesised that...
Information Warfare and the Politics of Threats: An analysis of Russian Information Warfare on Germany and its Perception by German politicians
Mehrer, Angela ; Ludvík, Jan (advisor) ; Bahenský, Vojtěch (referee)
The master thesis analyses the perception of Information Warfare and Russia among German politicians. By using the Qualitative Content Analysis by Schreier, speeches given in the German Bundestag relating to Information Warfare, and Russia were analyzed from January 2015 until December 2018. Using International Relations (IR) theories and political psychological approaches, a theoretical framework was developed in order to determine factors which have an impact on the perception of politicians. The thesis divides this perception into three categories - friend, partner, and threat. Each category is analyzed in depth resulting in support for two of the four hypotheses. The thesis demonstrates that it is not only the political orientation, but also economic interests which determine if a state and its warfare tactics are perceived as a danger. Moreover, the deductive part of the analysis reveals that Russia's behavior which can be perceived as aggressive, irrational, and power-seeking, also determines whether the regime is perceived as threatening. Information Warfare per se is no issue of concern in the Bundestag. However, information warfare tactics such as disinformation campaigns, the spread of fake news and propaganda, and Russia's meddling in western politics are perceived as a danger to...
Threat perception in the North Atlantic Region: Media Image of Terrorism in the US and Western Europe
Moravčík, Vladimír ; Hornát, Jan (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with media frames in selected American and British media with an influence over broader European audience. The subject of the research is the difference in the perception of terrorism in the US and Western Europe. The work specifically examines the contexts in which the terrorist threat was reported in 2001-2005 in The New York Times and The Guardian. The work is based on the works of Mary N. Hampton and Wyn Rees, who claim that in the US the threat of terrorism is seen as an external problem of military nature, while in Western Europe terrorism is seen as an internal criminal problem. This work identifies media frameworks in selected media that match this difference in perception of terrorist threat. The discursive analysis and the application of framing theory are used to identify the media frames.
